About the Chaucer Heritage Trust

We are a registered charity which promotes the life and work of Geoffrey Chaucer. Our mission statement is to further among the general public interest, understanding and appreciation of the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, his life and times and influence, and his position in English and world literature.

About the Scheme

In 2023 The Chaucer Heritage Trust launches a new scheme to promote understanding and appreciation of the works of Geoffrey Chaucer through live performance. Theatre companies can apply to the Chaucer Heritage Trust for a grant to support a production inspired by the life and works of Geoffrey Chaucer.

Who can apply?

Any UK based theatre company can apply for the grant scheme. Companies might include professional theatre companies, community theatre groups, amateur dramatics companies, musical theatre societies, university-based theatre groups.

What do we support?

Any theatrical performances which promote the life and/or works of Geoffrey Chaucer. These might include performances of new and existing adaptations of The Canterbury Tales and other works of Geoffrey Chaucer. Performances may also include existing works or new adaptations which explore and speak to themes in Chaucer’s works.

How much are the grants?

Each year we will offer grants up to a maximum of £10,000 (each company), up to the total value of £30,000 per annum.

When are productions to be performed?

Productions should be performed within 18 months of the grant.

How to apply

To register your interest in this scheme please contact the trust at admin@chaucer.org.uk. Please provide us with as much information as possible, to help us understand your group and proposed production. Useful information could include:

  1. The name and location of your theatre group (including weblinks if applicable).
  2. A short description of recent past performances (including weblinks if applicable).
  3. A brief description of your proposed performance.
  4. A summary of how it would promote the life and works of Geoffrey Chaucer.
  5. A brief description of your proposed production, including, date(s) and venue(s).
  6. How much you would like to apply to the scheme for: £2000, £5000, or £10,000.
  7. A summary of how this money would be spent.

What happens next?

Each application will be carefully considered by the Trustees. This may take several weeks. During the period you may be contacted for more information. If you have not heard anything after one month, please do get in touch with us. Successful applicants will be asked to provide a short report of their production within 6 months of the final performance. Information within these reports may be published on our website.

Please note, the decision of the Trustees will be final in all matters.
